Upon arriving at Gonggar Airport in Lhasa, Tibet's administrative capital and one of the highest cities in the world, you'll be greeted by a representative from the Alpine Club of Himalaya. If you fly in from Nepal, you’ll experience an hour of stunning views over The Himalayas, considered one of the most beautiful air routes globally. If you travel via mainland China, you can either fly in or take the world’s highest train route to Lhasa.
Lhasa sits at an elevation of about 3,600 meters (11,800 feet) on the Tibetan Plateau, with surrounding mountains reaching up to 5,500 meters (18,000 feet), where the air contains only 68 percent of the oxygen found at sea level. To help you acclimate and minimize altitude sickness, it’s recommended that you rest for the remainder of the day. You’ll spend the night in Lhasa.
