Slackpacking the Appalachian Trail: Massachusetts — Rugged Trails, Big Views, and Comfortable Nights
For many, hiking the Appalachian Trail is a lifelong dream—but the idea of carrying a heavy pack and sleeping on the ground can be a bit daunting. Enter slackpacking: all the adventure of thru-hiking, with the comfort of returning each night to a cozy bed and a hot shower.
This section of the AT winds through the forests and ridgelines of western Massachusetts, offering a variety of terrain—think roots, rocks, rewarding climbs, and sweeping views. We’ll hike point-to-point each day with just a daypack, culminating in a summit of Mt. Greylock, the highest peak in Massachusetts.
With the perfect blend of challenge and comfort, this trip offers a taste of the Appalachian Trail that’s as satisfying as it is accessible.

There are approximately 90 miles of the Appalachian Trail in Massachusetts and we will slackpack the most beautiful section, starting close to the border with Connecticut and ending on the summit of Mount Greylock, the highest point in the state! Plan to fly into the Albany Airport (ALB) by 1:30PM for our 2PM group meeting. We will drive one hour east to our beautiful Victorian rental house in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. This small town is home to big charms like the Norman Rockwell Museum and Tanglewood, the Boston symphony orchestra's summer academy. Time to relax and rest before an exciting day! Tonight we'll get to know each other over the first of many delicious meals.
